Dr Caroline Horwath BSc (Hons), Postgrad Dip Nutr Dietetics, PhD
DIRECTOR & GROUP LEADER

Dr Horwath (PhD, Department of Community Medicine, University of Adelaide, 1987) is a Behavioural Nutritionist, and has training in Mind-Body Medicine, Harvard Mind-Body Medical Institute, USA.

Dr Horwath has 20 years research experience in nutrition, ageing and healthy lifestyle change. She combines a holistic mind-body approach, with a rigorous scientific background in facilitating healthy lifestyle change. Ten years personal experience with a range of mind-body approaches to health promotion enables her to integrate the science and art of enhancing wellbeing.

Dr Horwath began her research on nutrition and ageing in Australia in 1985; then from 1988-1997 worked on the 'Mosgiel Community Study' of people 70 years and older with Prof John Campbell, Dr Clare Robertson and Dr Wendy Busby of the Otago Medical School. More recently, she has worked with health promotion researchers at the Cancer Prevention Research Centre, University of Rhode Island, USA; and is currently collaborating on a project to investigate mechanisms of health behaviour change with the Social and Behavioural Health Science Program, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii.

She is the author of ten book chapters and over 40 articles in peer-reviewed international journals on nutrition, ageing, and health behaviour change.

Dr Horwath has worked as a full-time Senior Lecturer (1995-2004) and Lecturer (1987-1994) in the Department of Human Nutrition at Otago University. Since 2005, she has worked as a part-time Senior Lecturer.


Jane Gillespie, Yoga and Pilates Instructor

Jane Gillespie is a highly skillled instructor with more than 25 years experience teaching yoga. Since 2003, she has owned the Dunedin-based Utopia Body Workshop Pilates Studio, where she offers group and individual sessions in pilates and yoga.

Her qualifications include a yoga teacher's certificate (Bahamas, 1980), Diploma in Massage (Florida, 1981), 2-year teaching training in Iyengar yoga (Christchurch, 2001) and a Bachelor of Education with a certificate in counselling theory (Massey University). Jane Gillespie completed her pilates training and certification through Polestar, an internationally renowned, Florida-based US training institute.

Further massage qualifications gained during the 1990s include: Deep Tissue Massage, Reflexology & Sports Massage. Prior to her work in yoga and pilates, Jane Gillespie had 15 years experience as a school teacher. She also has a wide range of other skills, training and experience in holistic approaches to health promotion.
